At the Cinema Australia Luncheon held last week in the swanky Star Hotel ballroom on the Gold Coast, for the 2023 Australian International Movie Convention, Chris Nyst took to the stage – along with film producer Trish Lake and award-winning actor David Wenham – to take part in a lively Q&A, hosted by local radio personality Bern Young, to announce the long-awaited sequel to their 2003 crime/comedy triumph, Gettin’ Square. The original film, nominated for more than 30 Australian Film Industry awards, won Chris a Best Screenplay Award as the writer, and saw lead actor David Wenham scoop the pools with four major Best Actor Awards for his unforgettable performance as the resourceful but hapless junkie, Johnny Spitieri (aka “Spit”).

Last week, Wenham told the more than 700 Convention delegates that, twenty years on, despite his many subsequent roles in international blockbusters like 300, Lord of the Rings, and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, the character his Australian fans most seem to cherish is the irrepressible Johnny Spit. So the original Gettin’ Square production team, along with London-based director, Jonathan Teplitsky, now plan to reprise the much-loved movie miscreant. Chris Nyst has written the screenplay for the new film, which will be simply entitled Spit.

With pre-production set to commence on the Gold Coast next month, Spit is expected to film in February and March next year, with its international release currently scheduled for early 2025.
